On July 28, 2024, the Girls With Period team, alongside guests and supporters, celebrated the 5th edition of Games for Charity (GFC). This annual event features various games played for a small token, with all proceeds benefiting women with special needs, those in rural areas, and inmates without access to sanitary products. Held at the Rooftop by Boardroom in Lekki, Lagos, this year’s event introduced a new element—karaoke, setting the stage for a night of fun, games, and fundraising. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Rooftop by Boardroom and I Sabi Naija Board Game (ISANJA).
The evening began with the I sabi Naija Board game, designed to test participants’ knowledge of Nigeria. The founder outlined the rules of the game and divided attendees into four teams, each led by a designated leader. As team leaders described the questions from the cards to their teams, the game sparked amusing moments as they struggled to guess the answers. One guest remarked, “Ah, na today I know say I really no sabi Naija,” eliciting laughter from the crowd.
Cocktails and small chops were served during the game, accompanied by soft background music that enhanced the event’s atmosphere. After 15 minutes of the ISANJA board game, a winning team was announced. The event then moved on to the next activity: Speed Friending. Participants engaged in rapid conversations with multiple individuals, facilitated by a bell that rang every minute to signal a change. This activity was really engaging, as guests enjoyed the opportunity to make new connections and friendships. Many participants even expressed appreciation for the Speed Friending activity, noting its uniqueness and the value of the interactions it fostered.
A laptop at a designated station hosted the Wheel of Fortune game, where guests spun the wheel for a chance to win prizes. Winners were thrilled with their rewards, and even those who didn’t win enjoyed the excitement of spinning the wheel.
The evening’s highlight was the raffle draw, which began at 6 p.m. As numbered balls were drawn, the announcement of Ivie as the grand prize winner elicited laughter and playful comments, as she was one of the last arrivals.
Following the raffle, the event shifted to the karaoke segment, with food and drinks being served. Guests had a blast with silent karaoke, where they sang along to instrumental tracks, sometimes hitting the right notes and other times adding their own creative twists. The karaoke team battles followed, with teams competing for the best performances, ultimately resulting in one team being crowned the winner.
The media team captured group photos and conducted interviews, while gifts and souvenirs were handed out to guests. At around 8 p.m., Lisa, the programs manager delivered the closing remarks, expressing her appreciation to everyone for contributing to the event’s success. She also reiterated the event’s purpose and solicited donations to support the organization’s vision.
We extend our appreciation to our major sponsor, Rooftop by Boardroom, for their pivotal role in making this event a success, and to our partners and donors for their crucial contributions in raising awareness about menstrual hygiene and healthcare.
