The inspire, empower and gift campaign walk was schemed to raise awareness about the Caring for Girls with Period Initiative (GWP) and our fight against period poverty by sharing fliers, and other promotional materials. The GWP team alongside volunteers set out on the 22nd of May 2021, on a demonstrative walk to that effect and also to generate funds to reach out to more under privileged girls and women through sales of campaign items and donations.
Distribution of fliers which was scheduled to kick off by 7:00am was delayed because of the heavy downpour. At about 7:30am we set out from Con oil fuel station Ikeja after the Executive Assistant of GWP Mercy Okopi gave a pep talk about our organisation’s mission and vision, the campaign theme, and the do’s and don’ts so that all participants would spread positive and accurate awareness.
Ms Lucy who is a fitness enthusiast was ecstatic about the walk, she talked about how it was a plus for her to help herself and someone else simultaneously “it’s like killing two birds with one stone” she said while dancing to the bubbling tunes supplied by the live band ‘’I get to lose weight even though I skipped the gym today and still get somebody to gift a pad? Amazing!!’’.
No sooner than an hour into the walk some passer-by’s whose attention we had drawn started dropping by to either dance with us or give in their donations. An elderly woman Mrs. Bolu did not fail to express how happy she was to see youths come together for a good cause. She told us of how she was active in volunteering during her days but now all she can do is support financially, before she drove off, she prayed for everyone that participated and donated a carton of pads.
Glucose, water and chewing gums were distributed at intervals but the most incredible thing about the Gift a Pad Campaign Walk 2.0 was that even with the slight downpour, everyone that participated came and left in high spirits. The walk was concluded at Maryland bus stop and covid19 protocols were observed.
